JESSICA Simpson announced overnight the arrival of her baby daughter

"Eric and I are elated to announce the birth of our baby girl Maxwell Drew Johnson," Simpson wrote in an announcement on her website.

Maxwell is Johnson's middle name and Drew is the maiden name of Simpson's mother, Tina.

"We are so grateful for all the love, support and prayers we have received. This has been the greatest experience of our lives," the announcement added.

The newborn weighed in at 9 pounds, 13 ounces, and measured 21 and 3/4 inches.

Soon after the announcement appeared on Simpson's website, the baby's name became a top trending item on Twitter.

TMZ had reported that Simpson was spotted early Tuesday checking into a Los Angeles-area hospital, joined by her mum, sister, Ashlee, and Johnson's parents.

"Proud PaPaJoe !! Beautiful baby girl... What a miracle!" Simpson's father and manager, Joe, tweeted about the birth of his first granddaughter.

"What a beautiful day to celebrate new life with baby Maxwell Drew Johnson...she is a little angel!" Tina Simpson added in a tweet.

Simpson's 27-year-old sister, Ashlee, has a three-year-old son, Bronx, from her first marriage to rocker Pete Wentz.

Jessica Simpson, 31, announced in October that she was pregnant and revealed in March that she was expecting a baby girl.

She told Elle magazine that she and Johnson, 32, had picked out a "non-traditional" name.

The singer-turned-fashion designer began dating Johnson in May 2010, and the pair became engaged in November 2010.
