Tony Awards Nominees Announced, nominations spread out but 'Once' leads

“Spider Man: Turn off the Dark” cost $75 million. Its opening was postponed many times, and finally it debuted in this Tony season. But the Tony voters were not swayed. The show got two tedhnical nomination, but nothing in the main categories, even for delicious Patrick Page as the Green Goblin. So be it.

The lion’s share of Tony nominations went to “Once,” “Newsies,” “Follies,” “Nice Work if You Can Get It” in the musical category. In plays, it was “Death of a Salesman,” “Venus in Fur,” “Other Desert Cities,” among revivals and new entries.

The musical “Once” got 11 nominations. The revival of the play “Death of a Salesman” got 7. They were the leaders in their respective categories, and the likely winners.

Two other big winners were Disney and the Gershwin estate: Two musicals using George and Ira Gershwin songs — "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It" — each got 10 nominations.

And "Peter and the Starcatcher," a play about the origins of Peter Pan co-produced by Disney Theatrical Productions earned nine nominations, while Disney's energetic song-and-dance musical "Newsies" got eight nods.

Christian Borle, the "Smash" star who was nominated for his hysterical performance as Black Stash in "Peter and the Starcatcher," was preparing to go on with a big smile on his face. "It's been an amazing day. So, really, I could get hit by a bus right now and think it was a net gain."
